Here’s the unvarnished story of how I met one of my closest collaborators.

Hi Russell,

I will link you my article that I explained briefly what I will focus on the thesis.

The questions are really meaningful and also challenging. I can say that maybe I can try to build a rich emphatic relationship between intelligent and evolving machine and the users. Since design is still at the beginning of this exploration, I can try to focus and find a meaningful interactions as a first step. So, I can start to work on this question “how do you make device surfaces dynamic enough to be biological?” and a plus I would say that to combine this question with another one which is “how to make it dynamic and emphatic?”.

And at the end the answers can be several:

- Designing a novel interface for Maslo

- To test Virtual Agents like Google home, Alexa (physical embedded assistants) and Maslo (as a digital empathetic companion) to work as testbeds with users and understand what works better (In addition to that there is a new product that they will release soon or they’ve already released, which is Olly by Emotech. It is again an example of embedded assistant but they are saying that it is emotionally intelligent and empathic.) Maybe this one can be an option to find a meaningful position for Maslo and give strength to it.

- Imagining and building a futuristic scenario about this “dynamic surface”

I hope that they are meaningful and valuable points for you too.

I will be glad to hear your answer.

Have a nice start for your day.

Hi Cansu,

Do you have a link or a pdf of your topic development so far?

There are three main challenges of trust and computing devices:

  • We are used to a worldview in which tools (and advanced tools like devices) are MECHANICAL and are reliably controllable and predictable. Devices (and computers and networks of computers) are not predictable nor reliably reliable and never will be.
  • Technologists and designers keep trying to put “human-centered designs” on top of unpredictable computing but the designs are just slightly “cleaner” CONTROL interfaces that really don’t increase control.
  • Devices/Tools/Beings that behave unpredictably/non-linearly but have a linear/mechanical/tool metaphor driven interface makes the unpredictably impossible to manage and trust isn’t possible.

Biological beings do not have this problem. Biological beings interacting with biological beings assume a co-evolving relationship. There is no sense of a MECHANICAL RELATION. Trust in SHARED CONSEQUENCES is what drives Biological Relations… or Relations Between Beings.

this is the hard problem of design and computing devices. how do you make device surfaces dynamic enough to be biological and not mechanical?

I will provide more info and questions after i get a bit more about your thesis.

Hi Ross and Russel,

Amazing!
Hi Russell, nice to meet you. Thank you so much for this opportunity, I am so excited to work on Maslo!!

Now, I am in Italy so my time zone is GMT+2 as Ross knows. For communicating every possible way is fine for me.

Mainly I am using this personal emai. For WhatsApp, I am sharing my number too +9 — — 114. Feel free to select the easiest one

or even both to keep each other updated. I will be ready to read everything tomorrow morning.

I am open to all the possible questions to improve Maslo and match with my thesis. Please feel free to share any possible way,

question, research topic which is really important for Maslo’s improvement process.

Then I can discuss them with my supervisor too and also if you wish I can introduce him to you.

Once more, thank you so much. I will be waiting for the firehouse!

Best,

Cansu

Oh there is much to research and figure out

What’s the best way for me to interact with you? (Email? WhatsApp? Phone?)

Anything else you want to share before I send a firehouse of info and questions?

Hey Cansu -

We’ll be at the Wolfram Tech conference October 28–31.

Would be great to collaborate! Let me connect you with Russell who is leading R&D and research work.

Russ — see below… I spoke with Cansu a few weeks ago and she is developing her thesis on Maslo related stuff. Are there any “bottlenecks, unsolved issues or future exploration of Maslo” that could be included in her thesis? One thing that comes to mind is the use of the persona and personified interfaces as a way to build and enable trust? https://github.com/HeyMaslo/maslo-persona

Hi Ross,

It was a real pleasure to talk with you. I hope that everything is going well for you.

I had the opportunity to explain what you’re doing to my tutor, Davide, and he’s been amazed!

Moreover, he’s flying next 9–11 October to the MIT for the Desform19 “Beyond Intelligence” conference about AI, design and ethics.

Is it the same your colleague is going to attend?

Moving from this lighthearted topics, I write to you for more thoughtful intentions.

During the meeting with my supervisor, we went deeper on my article and also he read Maslo blog too. He mentioned that this

is a really good match what you are trying to discover and also what Maslo aims.

We have found so many synergies from what you (with Maslo) and me (with my thesis) are doing. He suggested to me to ask you that is

there any possibility to explore Maslo more if there is an opportunity to merge these world together.

I’ll shape the main part of my thesis in the next three months, moving from the research of a problem to the study and test of a possible solution.

If you see any good point for Maslo, your ongoing research and future improvements, I’d like to bring the Maslo case more deeply in my project

with an approach and perspective as an Interaction Designer.

If you’d like to share with me some bottlenecks, unsolved issues or future exploration of Maslo. I’d love to explore some solutions.

As a result, you can get a thesis focus on solving the key problems you’re facing and I can back up my ideas with a real project.

I kept it short, but if you feel that there is a touchpoint with my research work, I’d like to discuss how to cooperate.

Thank you,

Have a great week start!
